a good cup of coffee is a mystery - the perfect combination of many elements, freshness, roast, grind, pressure, temperature, origin - poured into just the right piece of pottery, endless possibilities. Taste, smell, feel, emotion, mechanics. Perfectly executed, the outcome is simple and deeply satisfying. It is the way every good day should begin. Leadership is... well... the same.

Don't Be Marginalized

Yesterday a friend, John Ried, told me about a colleague who had in his terms, "allowed herself to be marginalized" in her organization. She is in training & development... first, she allowed people to cancel last minute, without consequence, she modified and accommodated according to their schedules, she gave budget back when her leaders called for it, without a fight... thinking she was being a good corporate citizen and a team player, she unwittingly undermined her value. Now, she is in danger of being seen as a "cost center" with very little value to add. Whoa! I thought, what an easy trap to fall into! In fact, I've been guilty of most of the above actions with the Learning & Development department! I've got to get back on offense! Start networking, hoisting the flag, holding the line. Thanks, friend.
